Origin and history

The National Marine Museum of Brest is housed in the castle of the city, heir to the ship model room of the arsenal created in 1826. His collections, originally placed in the sculpture workshop of the arsenal, were evacuated to Morlaix during World War II before being transferred in 1958 to the Paradise towers of the castle. An extension in the dungeon was carried out in 1985 to improve reception and exhibitions.

The museum houses a variety of heritage: ship models, navigational instruments, paintings, sculptures (face figures, busts of maritime personalities) and art objects. It offers thematic visits on the architecture of the castle, shipbuilding, life on board, and the expedition of Perugia. At the end of the 17th century, the site was home to a "negro repository," reflecting a dark aspect of its history.

The collections cover modern archaeology, religious art (ex-voto), decorative arts, extra-European civilizations (Asian, oceanian), and military objects such as weapons or warships. The museum is labeled "Musée de France" and offers views of the harbour and the city, while highlighting the historical links between Brest and the Navy since the 17th century.

The castle itself, dating from the third to the twentieth century, presents Gallo-Roman foundations and fortifications of Vauban. The museum regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, such as Voyage en territures sudiens (2022-2023) or Plongée, counter-dive (2023-2024), and preserves works by sculptors such as Yves Collet or François Rude, and paintings by Marie Détrée-Hourrière.
