Solutrean Gisement du Malpas (C2 306, 307): Order of 11 November 1927
Origin and history
The Solutrean deposit of Malpas is an archaeological site located in Bourniquel, Dordogne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This monument is representative of the period of the Upper Paleolithic period, specifically of the Solutrean culture, which spans about 22,000 to 17,000 years B.C.E. The site was recognized for its historical and archaeological importance, which led to its classification as a Historic Monument by decree on 11 November 1927.
The Malpas site is located at 34 Le Malpas, 24150 Bourniquel. Available data indicate that the accuracy of its location is considered "a priori satisfactory". This deposit is one of the protected elements of French heritage, identified under cadastral reference C2 306, 307. Although practical visitor information is not detailed in the sources, its status as a Historical Monument makes it a place of interest for the study of Prehistory and Human Occupation during the Upper Paleolithic.
The Dordogne region, and more generally New Aquitaine, is known for its richness in prehistoric sites. During the Upper Paleolithic period, local populations lived mainly in hunting, gathering and stone-cutting. The deposits like the Malpas show the techniques of making flint tools characteristic of the solutrean culture, as well as the lifestyles of hunter-gatherers of that time. These sites play a key role in understanding migration and human adaptation to climate change in the glacial period.
