Origin and history

The Mont-calvaire de Sombacour is a devotional ensemble located on horseback in the communes of Sombacour and Bians-les-Usiers in the Doubs. Built between 1890 and 1895, it comprises fourteen stone stations, an oratory and a large wooden cross, arranged on a winding path leading to the top of a hill. Its scenographic location, at the entrance of the village, makes it an emblematic monument of local religious heritage. The ensemble was inscribed in the historical monuments on August 23, 1989, and labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage" by the Ministry of Culture.

The thirteen edicles house high reliefs in stone, while the Oratory contains a lying Christ carved by Charles Auffret in 1956. Chapel XIII bears the signature of Jules Guillin, author of reliefs between 1891 and 1895, as well as the monument to the dead at the base of the Calvary. This monument illustrates 19th century regional sacred art, combining devotional tradition and artisanal know-how.

The site is part of the typology of European sacred mountains, characteristic of Catholic regions. His path of the cross, conceived as a meditative journey, reflects the importance of collective religious practices in the Frankish countryside at the end of the 19th century. The 1989 protection covers all elements (stations, oratory, terrace, cross), highlighting their architectural consistency and heritage value.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as communal property and its openness to the public. Although the exact location is sometimes subject to approximation (precision note: 5/10), GPS coordinates and the official address (25520 Bians-les-Usiers) allow it to be located precisely in the Doubs landscape.
