The two hydraulic cranes, located at the railway depot (non-cadaster case, public domain): registration by decree of 3 July 1996

Origin and history

The hydraulic cranes of Sotteville-lès-Rouen are two industrial structures built in 1931 by the Chappée au Mans factories. They were intended to supply water to the boilers of the steam locomotives in the western network, a function they performed until 1968. Their technical design rests on a base and a cast iron base, topped by a column ending in a col-de-swan assembly, allowing a swivel movement to fill the tanks of the tenders.

Classified as Historic Monuments by Order of 3 July 1996, these cranes are now used to power the Pacific 231 locomotive, which was classified as movable in 1984. Their location at the Sotteville-lès-Rouen railway depot, in the public domain, reflects their historical role in the operation of the French railway network. Their preservation bears witness to the importance of the industrial heritage linked to the steam age.

Their exact address, 1 rue Gaston-Contremoulins, and their Insee code (76681) place them precisely in the Seine-Maritime department, in the Normandy region. Although their GPS location is approximate (5,000 Rue d'Eauplet), their presence remains a tangible marker of local and national railway history. Their state of conservation and accessibility are not specified, but their status as public property makes them subject to conditions.
