Façades and Roofing (Case AB 90): inscription by order of 17 August 1979
Origin and history
The Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni sub-prefecture is an administrative building built during the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. This building, located in the commune of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, embodies the French territorial organization in Guyana during this period. Its architecture reflects the administrative needs of the time, in an area marked by its colonial history and its strategic role at the edge of the Amazon.
The monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 17 August 1979, thus recognizing its heritage value. Protected elements specifically include facades and roofing, as the Merimée base specifies. This ranking underlines the importance of preserving an architectural testimony of public administration in Guyana in the 19th century, in a context where Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni played a key role as a border town and settlement.
The sub-prefecture is now owned by the department of Guyana. Its official address, recorded in the Mérimée base, is 4 avenue Général-de-Gaulle, although approximate GPS coordinates are also located at 6 Rue Thiers. This gap illustrates the challenges of precise location for some historic buildings in urbanly changing territories. The building, although classified, does not see its current use (open to the public, administrative function) specified in available sources.
