Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Anastasie, located in Sainte-Anastasie (Cantal), was mentioned for the first time in 1131, when it was ceded to the Abbey of Moissac. It housed the relics of Saint Anastasia and Saint Wolf, attracting pilgrims and faithful. Its initial architecture, marked by a three-span nave and a flat bedside Romanesque choir, reflects its medieval origin.

In the 15th century, the building underwent notable changes, including the addition of side chapels flanking the last two spans of the nave. These chapels, rebuilt in modern times, are inspired by 15th century models. The exterior bedside, adorned with a five arch arched arch in the middle of the hangor resting on carved columns, bears witness to the artistic influence of the Romanesque era.

Ranked a historical monument in 1986, the church illustrates the architectural and spiritual evolution of the region. Its history is linked to the veneration of relics, the monastic influence of Moissac, and the successive transformations that shaped its present appearance. The carved capitals, representing masks, leaves and buttocks, add a remarkable artistic dimension.

The location of the church in the village of Sainte-Anastasie (now attached to Neussargues en Pinatelle) underscores its central role in the community and religious life of the Cantal. Its designation as historic monuments in 1986 preserved this emblematic heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
