Origin and history

The Saint Lucian church of Averns, located in Val-d-Oise, finds its origins at least in the middle of the 12th century, as evidenced by its portal of transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles. Founded under the patronage of Saint Lucien, the first bishop of Beauvais martyred in the third century, it was dependent under the Old Regime of the Priory of Saulseuse (Eure) and the Archdiocese of Rouen. The construction ran from the 12th to the 13th century, with a primitive Gothic choir and transept, followed by a nave rebuilt in the late 15th century after destruction during the Hundred Years War (1434). The capitals of the 12th century, reused, and the Romanesque portal moved northward recall these successive phases.

In the 19th century, the church underwent radical restorations: in 1883 and 1888, the choir and the southern crusillon saw their capitals and vault keys replaced, while the nave received false plaster vaults. The north crusillon, restored in 1901, preserves unfinished capitals as cubic blocks. Despite these interventions, the crossover of the authentic transept remains the best preserved part, with its dogive vaults and medieval polychromy. Ranked a historic monument in 1945, the church today illustrates the architectural evolution and the challenges of conservation, while remaining an active place of worship within the parish Avernes and Marines.

The furniture includes classified elements, such as a bell of 1729 and Louis XV credences, as well as a 17th century painting depicting the Ecce Homo by Brother Luke. The steep bell tower, with an arrow in slate, and the foothills of the eastern parts characterize its exterior. However, the soil moisture caused by a nearby spring and washbasin damaged the foundations, especially in the northern crusillon. The history of the parish, linked to a now disappeared priory, remains partially unknown due to lack of archival documents.

The church is part of the French Vexin Regional Natural Park, a territory marked by agriculture and rural villages. Under the Old Regime, Avernes depended on the dean of Meulan and the French Vexin, a region of small seigneuries and local prayers. The French Revolution transformed its ecclesiastical status: attached to the diocese of Versailles in 1790, then to Pontoise in 1966, it reflected the administrative and religious reorganizations of Ile-de-France. Today, its hybrid architecture and its community role make it a living heritage, despite the alterations suffered over the centuries.
