Origin and history

The Saint Vincent de Marcq-en-Barœul Church, located in Place du Général-de-Gaulle, is a Catholic religious building dating back to the twelfth century, although its present structure dates mainly from the sixteenth century. It is the oldest building in the commune and has served as a nucleus for the development of the historical district of Bourg. Its architecture reflects successive additions, especially during the Empire, where it was restored and enriched with works from the collegiate Saint-Pierre de Lille, destroyed at that time.

In the 19th century, faced with the population growth of Marcq-en-Barœul, the church was enlarged in 1865 to become a hallekerk (church-halle), thanks to the enlargement and the elevation of the lower side. Damaged during the First World War (soil collapse and partial collapse of the cornice), it benefited from further restorations after 1918. Its furniture includes carved wooden confessionals and stalls representing fourteen founders of religious orders.

Among the notable works, two paintings by Pharaoh of Winter, The Adoration of the Shepherds and The Holy Women at the Tomb, adorn the building. Only the tower is protected as historical monuments since 3 December 1987, as a communal property. The church thus embodies both local history and architectural transformations related to cultural and demographic needs.
