The two barns-stables (Case AK 164, 262): inscription by decree of 22 March 2002

Origin and history

The juxtaposed barns of the Hospital, located in Argentat-sur-Dordogne, date from the 18th century. They are a remarkable example of limousine rural architecture, with their low drop-down walls and two-sided lauze roof. This elongated building, reinforced by foothills surrounding the cart doors, illustrates the construction techniques adapted to the agricultural needs of the time: stability, optimized space and weather protection.

The interior layout follows the traditional model of barns-stable limousines. Each carriageway door opens onto an area to beat, directly connected to a barn topped by a fenil. The right-hand barn retains original facilities such as a wooden rack, feeders and partition boxes for animals. The frame, composed of chevrons forming firm with roll-up inserts, bears witness to a craftsmanship adapted to local resources.

Classified Historic Monument by decree of 22 March 2002, these barns reflect the collective agricultural organization and the practices of breeding in Corrèze in the 18th century. Their preservation provides insight into rural heritage and crop storage techniques, which are essential to the survival of the peasant communities of the time.
