Origin and history
The statue of the Volunteer of 1792, located in Remiremont in the Vosges department, was created in 1899 by sculptor Paul-François Choppin. She paid tribute to the inhabitants of the district who were among the first to send volunteers to defend the homeland in 1792 during the French Revolution. Located at the intersection of Rue Charles-de-Gaulle and Rue de la Xavée, it symbolizes the civic and patriotic commitment of the local population.
The statue, accompanied by its base, was listed as historical monuments on 27 February 1996. The base has two inscriptions: "A volunteer of 1792" and "Gift of the State 1899". This monument has become an emblem of the city, illustrating its attachment to revolutionary history and collective memory.
In 1995, La Poste issued a stamp representing the statue, highlighting its cultural importance. In 2009, another personalized stamp, designed by the town hall of Remiremont, again highlighted this monument. In addition, the city's cultural centre was named "Espace Le Volontaire", with direct reference to this emblematic statue.
The creation of this statue is part of a broader context of commemoration of revolutionary events. At the end of the 19th century, many monuments were erected in France to celebrate the heroes and values of the Revolution. In Remiremont, this work also reflects the local importance of military and civic engagements during this pivotal period in French history.
