Origin and history

The Monument to Jeanne d'Arc is a golden bronze equestrian statue commissioned by the French government after the defeat of 1870, in a context of Parisian "statomanie". Inaugurated in 1874 on Pyramids Square, it symbolizes the national "conquest". Jeanne is represented there in armor, bare head, brandishing her banner on a caparoned horse, near the place where she was injured during her attempt to take Paris.

The statue was executed by Emmanuel Frémiet, who took Domrémy's Lorrain peasant Aimée Girod as his model. The pedestal was designed by architect Paul Abadie, and the protective gate designed by Gabriel Davioud. Founded by Thiébaut Frères, the work aroused initial criticism of the proportions of the horse, considered too massive in relation to Jeanne's frail silhouette. Yet it soon became an artistic reference, as the critic Paul Mantz emphasized in 1889.

In 1899 Frémiet replaced the original horse with a reduced version, inspired by the one made for Nancy in 1889, causing controversy. Ranked a historic monument in 1992, the statue became a political gathering place, especially for the far right from the end of the 19th century. It also inspires culture, as in the film Nocturama (2016) or the opera La traviata (2019).

Replica of this equestrian statue exist in several French cities (Lille, Compiègne, Saint-Étienne) and international (La Nouvelle-Orléans, Philadelphia, Melbourne), testifying to its influence. The symbolism of Jeanne d'Arc, a national heroine, is associated with values of resistance and patriotism, reactivated after each historical crisis.

Future

On May 1st, the annual event of the National Front in honour of Jeanne d'Arc takes the statue of the Pyramids Square as a meeting place.

This tradition is a legacy of the far right leagues of the early 20th century: one of them, the White Rose League of Achille Joinard, thus laid in 1907 and 1908 white roses and lilies in front of the statue.
