Origin and history
The cross of Capdenac is a stone cross erected in 1667, located at the so-called Tourenne, north of the town of Capdenac, in the Lot department. It bears an inscription engraved on its barrel, mentioning the date of construction as well as the name of the sculptor, Fosside. The exact text is: "ECE PIEE HOVBRIE 1667 F by MOY FOSSIDE". This evidence attests to its origin and author, offering rare evidence of the local crafts of the time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 16 May 1911, this cross illustrates the religious and artistic heritage of the region. Its location, close to Capdenac, and its precise dating make it a significant historical marker to understand the devotional practices and sculptural techniques of the seventeenth century in Quercy. The cross is now owned by the municipality.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its heritage importance. A photo licensed by Creative Commons, attributed to Thérèse Gaigé, documents her current status. Although its exact location is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10) in the databases, its approximate address is indicated as 5133 Rue du Dr.Cipière, in Capdenac. The cross remains a tangible symbol of local history, linked to modern-day paths and places of worship.
