Origin and history
The stone cross of Saint-Martory is an emblematic monument of the 15th century, although some sources evoke a possible origin in the 14th century. Located in Place du Pont or near Rue du Barrerat, it was classified as Historic Monument by order of 3 March 1913. This type of cross, often erected at road intersections, served as a spiritual landmark and symbolized divine protection for travellers and residents.
Classified as communal property, this cross reflects the importance of religious symbols in the spatial organization of medieval villages. At that time, in Occitanie as elsewhere, the cross-crosses also marked parish boundaries or assembly places. Their presence reflected the collective piety and the anchoring of Christianity in daily life, between agricultural practices, pilgrimages and local festivals.
Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives highlight its approximate location and conservation status, assessed as fair (note 5/10). Owned by the commune of Saint-Martory, it remains a tangible vestige of the medieval heritage of Haute-Garonne, although little detailed information about its specific history or its sponsors is accessible.
