Origin and history

The Stele of Landivisiau is an emblematic monument of the Iron Age period, located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Finistère (region Brittany). This vestige, classified as Historic Monument by order of 21 February 1914, is located precisely at 1 rue Saint-Thivisiau. His state of conservation and his location were assessed as poor (note of 5/10 for accuracy), but there remains a rare testimony of the cultural and funeral practices of that time in Armorica.

At the Iron Age, Brittany was populated by Celtic communities organized into tribes, often linked to agricultural, craft and commercial activities. The steles, such as that of Landivisiau, could play a symbolic or commemorative role, marking places of assembly, burials or territorial boundaries. Their presence reflects the importance of monumental markers in protohistoric societies, where space was structured by durable visual markers.

These monuments, often made of local stone, were also testimonies of technical and artistic know-how specific to each region.
