Origin and history
The Gallic stele of Plonéour-Lanvern, also classified as menhir, is a historical monument located in the town of Plonéour-Lanvern, Brittany. Dating from the Neolithic, it is precisely Place du Bourg and Place de la République, according to the data of the Merimée database. This prehistoric vestige bears witness to the ancient occupation of this Breton territory, although its exact function remains subject to archaeological interpretation.
Ranked by ministerial decree on 16 January 1924, this stele is now owned by the municipality. Its location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the archives, suggests an approximate identification, reinforced by GPS coordinates pointing towards the Place de la République. Menhir, an emblematic element of Breton's megalithic heritage, illustrates the cultural and religious practices of neolithic societies, often linked to the cult of the dead or territorial markers.
Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its historic monument status and legal protection. No additional information is provided on any excavations, restorations or contemporary uses (visits, events). Insee code 29174 officially links Plonéour-Lanvern to the Finistère department in the district of Quimper.
