Protohistoric stele (Box A 544): inscription by order of 22 March 1974

Origin and history

The Protohistoric Stele of Treffiagat is a vestige of the Iron Age, located in the municipality of Treffiagat, Brittany. This monument, whose location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), bears witness to the cultural and funeral practices of the Celtic populations of that time. It has been officially recognized as a Historic Monument, highlighting its heritage importance.

The stele is protected by a registration order dated 22 March 1974, specifically covering cadastre A 544. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée data) do not specify its exact use, this type of monument was generally associated with commemorative, religious or territorial functions in protohistoric societies. Its approximate address, 52 Avenue du 8 Mai 1945, allows to situate it in Finistère, a department marked by a high density of archaeological sites.

Treffiagat, attached to Insee code 29284, is part of a Breton territory rich in prehistoric and ancient heritages. Iron Age (approximately 800-50 B.C.) is a period of structure of Gaulish societies, where steles could be used as social markers, markers or symbols of power. No additional information is available on any excavations, associated discoveries or update contexts for this specific monument.
