Origin and history

The 17th-century Castelsarrasin Stele was found in the walls of the old city, on the site of a abandoned Saint-Sauveur cemetery in the early 19th century. It bears a partial inscription mentioning names such as Jean Guilhem Valette, Jean Thomas Ramond, as well as terms related to marguilliers (responsible laity of a parish) and references to the Bassin et au Pain. These elements suggest a link to parish management or funeral gifts.

Originally embedded in the wall of a private workshop (neighborhood Saint-Louis), the stele was the subject of an inscription at the Historical Monuments in 1947, repealed in 2014. Its transfer to the collections of the Castelsarrasin communal museum has been planned, although its exact location remains imprecise (level 5/10 depending on the sources). The engraved inscription, though fragmentary, evokes local actors involved in the religious or administrative life of the time.

The monument illustrates 17th-century funeral and parish practices in Occitanie, where steles often served as memorial markers in cemeteries. Its history also reflects urban transformations, with the decommissioning of Saint-Sauveur cemetery in the 19th century, symptomatic of the redevelopment of sacred spaces in urban areas. The stele, now private property before its museum transfer, bears witness to the collective memory and social structures of the Ancien Régime.
