Origin and history

Fort de Saint-Laurent-la-Vernede is a historic monument located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region. Built in the middle of the 15th century, it is distinguished by its defensive architecture and its protected elements, such as the facades of the houses, the church, the former presbytery, as well as the towers with their round path. These components reflect the strategic and community importance of the site at that time.

The entire Fort, including communal and private properties, was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 11 December 2003. This protection specifically covers facades, roofs, towers, and certain houses, highlighting their heritage value. The location of the Fort, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as "a priori satisfactory" according to available sources.

In medieval times, the forts like St. Lawrence-la-Vernede played a central role in local life. They served as shelters, places of worship and administrative centres for rural communities. Their architecture, often collective, reflected a social organization based on mutual protection and management of shared resources, such as furnaces or parish churches.
