Road crossing: registration by decree of 18 March 1927

Origin and history

The road cross in Saint-Geniez-ô-Merle, in the Corrèze department, has been a listed historical monument since 1927. It is distinguished by its round shape, pierced by four circles arranged around a central representation of a crucifixion, called "crusty" in the available sources. This type of cross, typical of rural areas, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.

In the Limousin, as in other French regions, the road crosses were commonly erected at crossroads or along roads. They played a role both spiritual and practical, marking places of prayer or gathering for peasant communities. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Catholic religion in everyday life, especially in medieval and modern times, where they served as landmarks in often isolated landscapes.
