Origin and history

La Croix du Gouah is a cross of paths located in Plumergat, Morbihan, Brittany. Dated from the 16th century, it is precisely rue Anne-de-Bretagne, at the exit of the village in the direction of Mériadec. This granite cross presents a polygonal barrel and a crucified Christ on one side, while the other side represents a sitting Christ holding a globe. Two standing characters appear under the arms of the cross, protected by a mess.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 15 June 1925, the Gouah Cross belongs to the commune of Plumergat. Its typical architecture reflects the religious and artistic traditions of Renaissance Brittany. The precise location, although noted as approximate (level 5/10), is indicated at 27 Rue Anne de Bretagne.

This type of monument, common in the Breton countryside, served as both a spiritual landmark and a territorial marker. The road crosses were often erected at the crossroads or at the entrances of the villages, symbolizing divine protection for travellers and inhabitants. Their presence attests to the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of the time.
