Origin and history
The road cross of Rouvres-la-Chétive is a historical monument dated the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, more precisely from 1664 according to the protected elements. It is located in the commune of Rouvres-la-Chétive, in the department of Vosges (region Grand Est). This type of cross, often erected at crossroads or on the edge of paths, served as a spiritual landmark and protection for travellers and local inhabitants.
Ranked by decree of 14 June 1909, this stone cross belongs today to the commune. Its location, although documented (5213 Rue de Landaville), is considered fair in accuracy (note 5/10). The cross of paths, frequent in Lorraine, reflect the importance of the Christian faith in the daily life of the countryside in the 17th and 18th centuries, also marking places of assembly or commemoration.
The monument is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 88401, attached to the arrondissement of Epinal. No information is available about its current accessibility (visit, rental) or its contemporary use. The associated photo, under Creative Commons license, is attributed to Jmremoville, but no additional details on its iconography or inscriptions are mentioned in the sources consulted (Monumentum, internal data).
