Designed the synagogue in 1857.
Origin and history
The synagogue of Phalsbourg, located in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region, was built in 1857 by the architect Boudot. It replaces a first synagogue erected in 1772 on the same site. This place of worship reflects the importance of the local Jewish community, present at the end of the seventeenth century and endowed with an influential rabbinate in the nineteenth century.
The synagogue, located at 16 Alexandre-Weil Street, was listed as a historic monument on 27 February 1996. After the disappearance of the Jewish community in the 1970s, the building was ceded to the city of Phalsbourg. In 2023, a renovation campaign was launched to transform the synagogue into an auditorium, with the support of the Heritage Foundation.
The architecture of the synagogue has maintained its original appearance since its reconstruction in 1857. The building, owned by a cult association, is a testimony of Jewish heritage in Lorraine. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its cultural and architectural importance in the region.
