Origin and history
The Taillas hotel, also known as the Barlet or Savignac hotel, is a private hotel located at 18 rue Émeric-David in Aix-en-Provence. Built during the first half of the 18th century, it is distinguished by a sober architecture, with a stone facade of Bibemus. The entrance door, decorated with fine exotic wood marquetries and bronze hammers, as well as the ironwork of the staircase ramp, are remarkable elements dating back to this period. Inside, the Regence style salon features gypsumsies inspired by warrior motifs, including a cannon-drawing love, evoking the works of Thomas Lainé d'Avignon.
The hotel in Taillas is a private residence and is not accessible to the public. It is part of a set of private hotels and historic houses located on Rue Émeric-David, an emblematic area of Aix-en-Provence. Among these buildings are the Hotel de Carcès, the Hotel de Panisse-Passis, and the old house of the Cézanne family. Some elements of the hotel, such as the wrought iron staircase and the decoration of the Louis XV lounge, were listed as historical monuments by order of 10 April 1929.
Emeric-David Street, where the hotel is located, is a place full of history, housing residences linked to local figures, such as the painter Achille Emperor. The Hotel de Taillas, with its architectural details and interior décor, illustrates the refinement of the 18th century Aix-en-Provence private hotels, while reflecting the influence of local artisans, such as the sculptor Thomas Lainé of Avignon, known for his work in other hotels in the region.
