The thermal baths of the former Gallo-Roman villa located Place des Thermes, entirely with the plate floor of their plot of settlement constituting an archaeological reserve – but excluding the northern part of this plot for parking purposes – cadastre ensemble section B No. 1604, following plan annexed to the decree: inscription by order of 8 March 2024

Origin and history

The thermal baths of Langrolay-sur-Rance are part of an old Gallo-Roman villa, located in the Côtes-d-Armor department, in Brittany. This archaeological site, located Place des Thermes, has been identified as a typical thermal complex of the Roman era, although its exact period of construction or use is not specified in the available sources. The remains are fully protected, including their plate floor, with the exception of a northern part used as parking space.

The inscription of the monument as a Historical Monument by order of 8 March 2024 underlines its heritage importance. Owned by the commune, the site could be linked to an aristocratic occupation or a Roman farm, frequent in this region during the Antiquity. The thermal baths, the central elements of Gallo-Roman villas, reflected the lifestyle and social status of their owners, while serving as a place of sociability and hygiene for local elites.

Their presence attests to an advanced romanization in this area of ancient Brittany, marked by cultural and economic exchanges with the rest of the Empire.
