Origin and history

La Maison des Templiers, located in Caudebec-en-Caux (formerly Anquetierville), is a 13th-century civilian building considered the oldest building in the city. His name remains mysterious, no source confirming a direct connection to the order of the Templars. This building, classified as a historical monument, has been home since 1926 to a museum dedicated to the history and archaeology of Caudebec and the Lower Seine Valley.

In 1918, the Association des Amis du Vieux Caudebec bought and restored the Maison des Templiers to avoid its sale abroad. The museum was established in 1926, thanks to the commitment of volunteers from the late 19th century. After the destruction of the Second World War, the collections are reconstructed from the rubble of the city, offering today a heritage rich in Celtic pottery, Gallo-Romans, and historical chimney plates.

The museum, labeled Musée de France, covers various fields: archaeology, fine arts, ethnology, modern history and photography. His interest lies as much in his medieval architecture as in his collections, reflecting local life since Antiquity. The accuracy of its location is considered to be satisfactory a priori, although its exact address (1 Rue Thomas Bazin) is sometimes associated with the neighbouring town of Rives-en-Seine, resulting from an administrative merger.
