Origin and history
The Protestant temple of Melun is a 20th-century religious building located at 8 Thiers Avenue in the south of the city. It is located in a courtyard accessible from a passage adjacent to the presbytery, itself located on the avenue. The building belongs to the United Protestant Church of France and marks the historical presence of Protestantism in the region.
The history of the temple is marked by its construction according to the plans of architect Jean-Pierre Roland. Inaugurated in 1961, it embodies a modern religious architecture adapted to the cultural needs of the local Protestant community. Its location in Melun reflects the urban and demographic boom of the Seine-et-Marne after the Second World War.
In terms of heritage, the temple has been listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage since a survey conducted in 2002. Although owned by a public institution, it does not enjoy a specific protection status such as historic monuments. However, its inclusion in the Mérimée and Île-de-France inventory shows its local architectural and historical interest.
