Origin and history

The Temple of the Union is a Hindu building located in the so-called L'Union, in the municipality of Bras-Panon, in La Réunion. Built at the end of the 19th century, it is located in the former sugar estate of the Union, built at the initiative of the owner of the house. This temple, of sober style, consists of a masonry building covered with a two-paned roof in corrugated sheet metal, accompanied by a structure on the terrace. Its architecture incorporates monestarlons (votive pillars) sealed in concrete bases, arranged in front and behind the main building.

The temple has been listed as a historic monument since September 17, 2010, recognizing its heritage value. It illustrates the implantation of Hinduism in Réunion, linked to the history of migration and work in sugar plantations. Its location in an old agricultural estate highlights the link between religious life and economic activity on the island.

The current structure, though modest, reflects local architectural adaptations, combining traditional materials (masonry) and industrial elements (corrugated plate). Monestarlons, characteristic of Hindu temples, mark the sacred space and recall the cultural practices imported by the engaged workers. Today, the temple remains a place of worship and a witness to the cultural heritage of Reunion.
