Origin and history
La Croix de Tenuel is a monumental cross at the so-called "Tenuel", at the entrance to Baud in Morbihan. Dated from 1687, it has been listed as historical monuments since May 8, 1933. Its architecture combines a cubic base with hemispherical apex, a barrel imitating a tree trunk, and a cross separated from the barrel by a boule knot. A shell niche adorns each side of the base, while a chalice carved on the base evokes an ecclesiastical sponsor, probably a priest.
The granite cross presents an isolated Christ, without other characters. The niches of the base once housed statuettes, now extinct. This type of composition, with a high hollowed base and a shelled barrel, is characteristic of the Breton crosses of the late seventeenth century. The engraved date (1687) and the chalice confirm its religious origin and its link with the local clergy.
The monument illustrates Breton Christian art of modern times, where the crosses served both as spiritual landmarks and as marks of public piety. Its inscription in 1933 underscores its heritage value, both for its architectural style and for its historical anchoring in the Morbihan landscape.
