Land on which is built the building Guingenaud, near the house of the Presidual: classification by decree of 14 September 1937
Origin and history
The land on which the Guingenaud building was built is located in Saintes, Charente-Maritime. This site was classified as historical monuments by order of 14 September 1937, because of its importance in the urban and architectural context of the city. The protection specifically concerns the land, linked to the house of the Presidual, an emblematic building of Saintes.
The Guingenaud building was acquired by the municipality as part of a project to clear the house of the Presidial, a nearby historic building. Its demolition was completed in 1938, marking the disappearance of the structure but preserving the heritage importance of the land. Today, this site remains a testimony to the urban transformations of Saints in the 20th century, while maintaining its status as a listed monument.
The Presidual House, in the immediate vicinity of the land, was a major judicial building under the Old Regime. The clearing of this space was part of a desire to highlight Saintonge's heritage, reflecting conservation policies in the 1930s. The classification of the land, although without construction, underscores its role in the urban and administrative history of the city.
