Origin and history
Thalinger House is an iconic building from the 1st quarter of the 17th century, located in Riquewihr in the Upper Rhine. It is distinguished by its square plan, between the two fortified enclosures of the city, with a gable overlooking the rue du Général-de-Gaulle. Its facade combines sandstone and wood panels, with ground windows and a corbelling with an exterior fireplace. A vintage engraved (1627) on a raven suggests a construction date for the anterior part.
The building, partially damaged during the wars, was restored around 1950. It once belonged to the municipal locksmith before being sold by the city in 1721. The entrance door and the window on the ground floor, not original, testify to the subsequent changes. Its architecture reflects local techniques, such as carved corner chains and crows supporting an ancient awning.
Ranked a historic monument in 1946, Thalinger House illustrates the Alsatian heritage of the early seventeenth century. Its northeast landing, probably later added, and its wood-pan structure on masonry solin reveal successive adaptations. Today, it remains a testimony of the urban history of Riquewihr, between crafts and military defense.
