Origin and history

The dread of Esnau is part of the fortifications of the Rhune, a defensive complex erected near the Franco-Spanish border. These works, some of which date back to the protohistoric period, were reinforced or reused during contemporary conflicts, notably between 1793 and 1794, during the clashes between the army of the Western Pyrenees and the Spanish troops. The dread is part of a wider network including sites such as the dread Louis XIV of Sare or the fortress of Ihicelhaya d'Ascain, described by General Francis Gaudeul.

The fortifications of the Rhune also played a role in the invasion of the Anglo-Hispano-Portuguese coalition led by the future Duke of Wellington. These structures, combining protohistoric heritage and modern military adaptations, illustrate defensive strategies deployed in the Atlantic Pyrenees in the 18th and 19th centuries. The work of Commander Charles Clerc and P. J. Pellot, quoted by Guy Lalanne, documented these military episodes.

Historical sources, such as the bulletins of the Société des sciences, lettres et arts de Bayonne or Jacques Antz's works, highlight the strategic importance of these fortifications. The dread of Esnau, although less documented than other sites, is part of this context of border tensions and military preparations, reflecting the geopolitical issues of the region at that time.
