Origin and history

The dread of the Madeleine Chapel, located in Sare in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a military work erected in the 1st quarter of the 19th century. It is part of the defensive system designed to protect the French-Spanish border, especially during Napoleonic wars. This fortification was part of the preparations for the fighting of 1793-1794 between the army of the Western Pyrenees and the Spanish forces, then to counter the Anglo-Hispano-Portuguese invasion led by the future Duke of Wellington in 1813.

The dread was associated with Marshal Soult's defensive strategy, which organized French resistance against British troops in 1813. Like other local fortifications, such as the dread Louis XIV of Sare or the fortress of Ihicelhaya d'Ascain, it illustrates the reuse and strengthening of ancient works to meet contemporary military challenges. Its registration as a Historic Monument in 1993 underscores its heritage and memorial importance.

Historical sources, including the work of General Francis Gaudeul and the writings of Commander Charles Clerc, document the role of these fortifications in the conflicts in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The dread of the Madeleine, although less known than other sites such as the Rhune mountain, remains a concrete testimony to the geopolitical tensions of the time and the tactical adaptations of the French armies.
