Origin and history

The theatre of Arras, inaugurated on November 30, 1785, is a remarkable example of Italian theatre designed by architect Gillet. Its façade, registered in 1946, hides a 380-seat elliptical hall decorated with decorated balconies and partitioned dressing rooms. The complex extends to the Place du Théâtre and rue Ernestale, including also a concert hall (1828) decorated by Charles-Antoine Cambon, as well as three additional rooms built in 1870-1871 (Orpheonists, Harmony, Philharmonie).

In 1828, works added the concert hall, accessible by the basements of the theatre or the back yard. This 350-seat room, with a floor and a circular gallery, was embellished in 1888 by the painters Callot (Hemicycle representing Arras) and Dilly. The façade on Ernestale Street, redesigned in 1853, completes the architectural ensemble. Between 2004 and 2007, a renovation created the André-Reybaz room (90 places), modernising the cultural offer.

Ranked a historic monument in 2000 for all its buildings, the theatre joins in 2013 with the Douai racetrack to form Tandem, a national stage offering theatre, dance, music and digital arts. His prestigious guests include Rufus Wainwright, Jan Fabre, or the Tana Quartet, reflecting his contemporary influence. The site is visited monthly, excluding school holidays.
