Origin and history
Dole Municipal Theatre is a neo-classical building built between 1840 and 1843 in the upper part of the city, rue du Mont-Roland. Designed by architect engineer Martin at the initiative of a local intellectual elite, it was inaugurated on 4 June 1843 in the presence of the Doloian aristocracy and Leonardo Dusillet, former mayor. Its neoclassical facade, with central forebody and columns, hides an Italian-style room decorated with wood-painted decorations and canvas maroufled by Och and Chenillon, initially garnished with blue velvet.
Ranked a historical monument in 1996, the theatre remained managed by the municipality until 1997, when its management merged with that of the theatre of Lons-le-Saunier to form the Scenes du Jura, which became a national scene in 2013. After closing for restoration in 2015, it reopened in November 2021. Owned by the city, it now hosts various performances (dance, concerts, theatre) under the aegis of this departmental cultural structure.
The building, located at 30 rue du Mont-Roland, illustrates 19th-century theatre architecture, mixing neo-Renaissance and neo-classical influences. Its interior decor, typical of Italian rooms, with dressing rooms and balconies, reflects the bourgeois fascist of the period. The work of 2015-2021 helped preserve this heritage, while adapting to contemporary standards, perpetuating its central role in the artistic life of Jura.
