Origin and history

The Municipal Theatre Molière de Sète is an emblematic monument to the city of Sète, built during the 1st quarter of the 20th century. This building, dedicated to the performing arts, is part of a period of cultural and urban development for this Mediterranean port city, marked by a dynamic artistic life and a strong identity linked to its maritime and commercial history. At that time, municipal theatres played a central role in the social and cultural life of French cities.

They served as a gathering place for the inhabitants, offering varied performances (theatre, opera, concerts) and reflecting the cultural aspirations of a changing population. In Sète, an expanding city thanks to its port and industrial activities, such equipment demonstrated the importance attached to culture as a vehicle for urban cohesion and prestige.
