Origin and history

The Anzin Coal Museum was founded in 1924 in the town house by Théophile Jouglet, then mayor. This place becomes the first of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin to enhance the memory of the coal industry. During World War II, the building was transformed into a police station and was bombed, requiring major renovation.

Re-opened in 1961 as the mine museum, it marks a key step in the preservation of regional industrial heritage. From 1990, he expanded his vocation to cover the cultural memory of Valenciennois. However, security concerns led to its final closure in 2011. Its collections have since been preserved by the Museum of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, in partnership with the Community of Agglomeration of La Porte du Hainaut.

Among the highlights were Lucien Jonas, an artist born in Anzin, whose temporary exhibition was held in 2013 at the local media library. The museum also played a role in the development of regional artists such as Corneille Theunissen and Constant Moyaux, linked to the territory's industrial and artistic history.

Labelled Museum of France, the site was located at 215 avenue Anatole France, in a building whose exact location remains approximate (map detail noted 5/10). Its legacy continues through collaborations with other heritage institutions in the region.
