Origin and history
The fountain of Theron is an iconic monument located in the town of Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire department. Built in the late 15th century, it is made of Blavozy sandstone, a local stone renowned for its durability. Behind the gable wall of a house, it has two carved shields: one with the Puy weapons, representing an eagle with wings deployed, and the other with the French weapons. These heraldic elements underline its historical importance and its link with the local and royal authorities of the time.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 13 April 1907, the fountain of Theron bears witness to the civil architecture and urban developments of the late Middle Ages. Its location, Chaussade Street (or close to General Lafayette Street), makes it a landmark in the historic centre of Puy-en-Velay. The fountain, owned by the municipality, also illustrates the importance of public water points in medieval cities, where they played a central role in everyday and social life.
Available sources, including Jean Chervalier's references in Les Fontaines du Puy (1968), as well as databases such as Mérimée, confirm his status as a protected heritage. The Theron Fountain is part of a larger set of historic fountains in the city, such as the Plot, Table or Crozatier, reflecting a local tradition of urban beautification and collective water management.
