Origin and history

The three Gallo-Roman funerary terres of Basse-Rentgen constitute an archaeological complex located in the commune of the same name, in the Grand Est region. These structures, characteristic of the collective or individual burials of the Gallo-Roman era, illustrate the funeral rites in effect between the 1st and the 5th century AD. Their presence attests to a human occupation and a social organization structured around the death and memory of the deceased.

In the regional context of the Great East, marked by a strong Roman influence due to its proximity to the commercial and military axes, funeral terres played a central role in the memory of local communities. These monuments served not only as burial places, but also as symbolic landmarks in the landscape, reflecting the social status of those buried. Gallo-Roman funeral practices, combining Celtic and Roman traditions, were particularly developed, as evidenced by these remains still visible today.
