Land of a capacity of 30 a, in the perspective of the Palace of Versailles: classification by decree of 20 January 1955

Origin and history

The federal land known as "Abords du carré de Réunion" is a protected area located in Bailly, Yvelines. This site, with an area of 30 acres, fits in with the visual perspective of the Palace of Versailles, highlighting its historical and landscaped link with this emblematic monument. Its classification by ministerial decree in 1955 shows its heritage importance, although details of its original use or evolution remain little documented in available sources.

The location of this land, in the immediate vicinity of Versailles, suggests a role in the planning of the outskirts of the royal estate, typical of the green spaces and the perspectives created under the Old Regime to magnify the royal residences. In Bailly, as in other neighbouring communes, these lands could be used to structure the landscape or to preserve open views, reflecting the aesthetic and strategic concerns of the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, this site remains a vestige of this planning, although its access and current use are not specified.
