Origin and history

La Croix des Morts is a monument located in the commune of Faucogney-et-la-Mer, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century or the first quarter of the 17th century, this cross is representative of the religious or memorial buildings of this period, often linked to the funeral traditions or spiritual landmarks of local communities. In the region of Haute-Saône, in modern times, crosses of this type generally served as gathering points or symbolic markers for the inhabitants.

They could indicate places of prayer, important crossroads, or commemorate local events. Their presence also reflected the importance of religion in the social and daily organization of villages, where the Church played a central role in community life.
