Origin and history
The 17th century gate is part of a mansion built in the first half of the 17th century in Dun-sur-Auron, Cher department. This monument, classified as a Historical Monument since 1926, was originally designed for a family of notaries. Its architecture includes a wooden panel gallery linking the main house to a secondary house, as well as a corner pavilion occupied by cabinets at each level. The distribution of spaces was profoundly altered in the mid-19th century, with the movement of the main entrance from the main street to Porte-Neuve Street.
At the time of its construction, the hotel reflected the social status of its owners, influential notaries in the region. The door, an emblematic element, was integrated into a complex including a courtyard, a cochère door, a barn and a stable, some of which have now disappeared. The 19th century transformations, such as the destruction of the original court and the addition of a new building, altered its initial configuration, while preserving traces of its history.
The door, protected by a registration order in 1926, bears witness to Dun-sur-Auron's architectural and social developments. Its current location at 10 Porte-Neuve Street, and the remains of successive changes, offer an overview of the adaptations of a private hotel over the centuries, between heritage conservation and urban transformation.
