Origin and history
The square tower of Fa is a medieval building located on the town of Val-du-Faby, in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, it is often wrongly referred to as the Visigoth Tower of Fa, although its architecture and history clearly belong to the Middle Ages. The tower, almost square in shape, has a low gate facing east and only two arches, three metres from the ground, one to the north and the other to the south. Nearby, a rectangular tank dug in the rock, partially filled, bears witness to its defensive or residential use.
In 1360, the place of Fa was mentioned as a possession shared between the Archbishop of Narbonne, who exercised part of the seigneurial justice there, and other co-signors. The building is today the last vestige of a fortified enclosure of which only a fragment remains to the west. The tower and its adjacent fortifications were listed as historic monuments by order of 14 April 1948, while the hill on which it stands has been protected as natural sites since 1945. The property now belongs to the municipality of Val-du-Faby.
The present state of the tower reveals a sober structure, without ornamentation, typical of military or seigneurial constructions of the medieval period in Languedoc. The narrow arches and elevated position suggest a defensive vocation, while the tank indicates a preparation for extended seats. Although partially in ruins, the site offers a material testimony of feudal dynamics and local conflicts that marked this region in the Middle Ages.
