Origin and history

The Tower of the Guet of Pont-sur-Sambre is a historical monument located in the commune of Pont-sur-Sambre, in the Nord department (59), in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 17th century, this old tower probably served as a surveillance or defence post for the city. It is now classified as a Historic Monument, with official protection since 1969.

The Tower of the Guet is the property of the commune of Pont-sur-Sambre. It is open for visit on the second Sunday of each month, or on request for groups, via the Museum of the Country House. Its state of conservation and its precise location (159 Grand-Rue) make it a notable heritage element of the city, with a GPS location deemed very satisfactory.

In the 17th century, watchtowers played a key role in fortified cities, serving as both a monitoring point and a symbol of local authority. In Hauts-de-France, a region marked by border conflicts and intense trade, these structures were essential for the protection of inhabitants and the control of access. The Tower of the Guet of Pont-sur-Sambre is part of this broader historical context, reflecting the defensive concerns of the time.
