Origin and history

The Tower of the English of Agde, classified as a Historical Monument, is a military building built in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its square structure rising on three floors, the last of which is surmounted by a cradle vault pierced by a bezel. This arrangement allowed access to the upper platform via a ladder, reinforcing its defensive role.

Each side of the tower was protected by a scald equipped with mâchicoulis and murderers, architectural elements typical of the fortifications of the time. These devices were designed to provide optimal surveillance and defence against possible attacks. The tower was strategically positioned on Mont Saint-Loup, a high point with a dominant view of the surrounding area.

The Tour des Anglais was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of June 6, 1939. This classification recognizes its heritage value and its importance in local history. Today, it remains an architectural testimony of the defence systems of the sixteenth century in the Occitanie region, although its access and current uses (visit, rental, etc.) are not specified in the available sources.
