Origin and history

Castellane Pentagonal Tower is a major defensive structure of the fortification system of the city, built in the 14th century. It is distinguished by its irregular pentagonal plane and its five floors, reaching nearly 20 meters in height. Located at the highest point of the ramparts, it dominates the city and preserves traces of archeries and mâchicoulis partially modified over the centuries. Its masonry, composed of limestone bellows and tufted chains, reflects local medieval construction techniques.

Ranked a historic monument in 1921, the tower is a typical example of Provencal fortifications of the second half of the 14th century, a period marked by regional tensions and the need to protect cities. Although its original mâchicoulis has been replaced by a built-in roof, its original defensive role is reflected in the ressalt consoles and visible archères. Subsequent transformations, such as partial throat walling, remain difficult to date accurately, but illustrate its adaptation to changing needs.

The fortifications of Castellane, of which this tower is part, are traditionally associated with the year 1359 and subsequent years, a time when the region strengthened its defences in the face of conflicts. The pentagonal tower, although partially modified, remains one of the best preserved elements of this ensemble. Its ranking in 1921 underscores its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its history linked to the protection of the medieval city.
