Le Castet signal tower: inscription by decree of 11 April 1950
Origin and history
The signal tower of Castet d'Oo is a medieval building located in the commune of Oo, in the Haute-Garonne region of Occitanie. Dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, it stands at the place called Castet, slightly northeast of the village. Its square plan and traces of interior floors suggest a defensive or monitoring function, typical of the buildings of this period in mountainous areas.
The tower was listed as a historic monument in 1950, recognizing its heritage importance. Although its roof was later remodeled, the building retains original elements such as chimney remains. It is mentioned as a twin tower of Saccour Vieille, indicating a local communication or defence network. Today, the tower belongs to the municipality of Oo and remains an architectural testimony of medieval signalling systems.
At the time of its construction, the Xth and 11th centuries were marked by a feudal organization in Occitanie, where watchtowers played a key role in protecting territories and populations. These structures were used to monitor the Pyrenean valleys, often exposed to conflict or incursions. The Castet Tower thus illustrates the adaptation of local communities to an unstable geographical and political environment, while serving as a benchmark for exchanges between valleys.
