Origin and history
La Tour de Balayard is a medieval building located in the village of Fleury, in the department of Aude. Probably dating from the 15th century, it is the last vestige of a fortified enclosure whose exact layout remains difficult to determine today. Its thick walls and round structure, although gross in bill, testify to its defensive role in the local historical context.
The tower was listed as historic monuments on December 23, 1981, recognizing its heritage value. This protection specifically concerns its façade and roof, as specified in the registration order. Today, it stands as an architectural witness to the medieval history of Fleury and its region.
In the 15th century, the Languedoc-Roussillon region (now integrated into Occitanie) was marked by a social and economic organization centred around fortified villages. Towers such as Balayard served both as a monitoring point and a refuge for residents in the event of conflicts, which were frequent during this period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These structures also reflected the local power and the need to protect the region's agricultural and commercial resources.
