Origin and history
The 30-metre-high, brick-built Villemur-sur-Tarn defence tower finds its possible origins in the 13th century. Its architecture initially reflected a military vocation, which it retained until 1631. Defensive elements, still visible, demonstrate this strategic role in local protection. The tower then marked the landscape as a symbol of power and resistance.
In 1636, the tower lost its warrior function to convert into a flask, a workshop dedicated to the treatment of wool sheets. This industrial use marks the beginning of an economic transition for the monument, now integrated with the textile activities of the region. The layouts of the period, like the vats and ducts, remain in its bases, offering a material testimony of this period.
In the 19th century, the tower adopted a new vocation with the installation of three pairs of grinding wheels to grind the grain. The remains of the metal wheels, valves and water ducts, visible on the ground floor, illustrate this agricultural and artisanal phase. In 1872, the Brusson family even started making pasta, diversifying its industrial use further before it was classified as a Historic Monument in 1977.
Today, the tower embodies the successive changes of a military, artisanal and industrial heritage. Its walls bear the traces of nearly seven centuries of history, from medieval conflicts to industrial revolutions and textile crafts. Its classification in 1977 devotes its historical and architectural value to future generations.
