Clock Tower: inscription by decree of 22 February 1927

Origin and history

The Apt Clock Tower is an iconic belfry of the city, built in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its unique architecture, spanning a shopping street thanks to a vaulted door that allows pedestrian passage. At its top, a wrought iron campanile supports a bell, while clock dials, visible on either side of the street, adorn its top floor. This monument, adjacent to Sainte-Anne Cathedral, embodies the historical and architectural heritage of Apt.

The Clock Tower has been classified as historic monuments since February 22, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. Its structure, both functional and symbolic, reflects the importance of belfries in medieval and renaissant cities. These buildings served not only to speed up daily life thanks to their clock, but also to mark the urban space with their imposing presence.

Located in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, the tower is now a central landmark in the city. Its location on the rue des Marchands, a shopping artery, highlights its historical role in the economic and social life of Apt. The tower, owned by the municipality, remains an architectural testimony of the rising period, while continuing to mark the contemporary urban landscape.
