"Saunerie" tower and the vestibule and 19s stairway leading there (Box DK 1009): inscription by order of 26 August 1988

Origin and history

La Tour de la Saunerie is a historical monument located in Avignon, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is located at 25 Carnot Street, in an area whose geographical accuracy is considered satisfactory a priori. This monument is distinguished by its tower, accompanied by a vestibule and a 19th century staircase, which leads to it.

These elements were officially protected by registration under the Historical Monuments, according to an order dated 26 August 1988. The inscription refers specifically to the so-called Tower of Saunery, as well as the adjacent spaces of the vestibule and stairway of the 19th century. These provisions suggest a desire to preserve an architectural heritage combining old structures and more recent additions.

The monument, although little documented in the available sources, bears witness to the urban evolution of Avignon, a city marked by its medieval and modern history. Towers of this type could play a defensive, residential or industrial role, depending on local times and needs. Their presence often reflects the strategic or economic importance of the place throughout the centuries.
